OBITUARY
CLAXTON: Edith Peace Self, 91, passed into God’s hands on March 21, 2015. Edith was born on January 18, 1924 to William Wallace Peace and Maude Elizabeth (Goodrum) Peace on Little Sand Mountain in North Georgia. She graduated from Jacksonville High School in Alabama in 1943. Edith later attended Jacksonville College and finished her nursing degree at Hillman Nursing College in Birmingham, AL in 1946. It was while at Jacksonville College that Edith met Neal Watson Self.
Neal and Edith were married January 10, 1948 in Anniston, Al and loved each other for 67 wonderful years. They had 5 children; Mary Louise Beeman, David Edward Self, Rebecca Elizabeth Jones, William Scott Self and Sara Alice Garner. She especially enjoyed talking about her 8 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren to anyone who would listen.
Edith was a Registered Nurse for 46 years and upon her retirement she and Neal moved to Claxton, GA where they cared for their granddaughter, Sara Jones, whom they dearly loved, for 25 years. Edith was an active member at the First United Methodist Church in Claxton and was also a member of the United Methodist Women. She was secretary and weekly volunteer at the local food bank for over 20 years, member of the George Durrence Sunday Class, the Wesleyan Fellowship and Super Seniors at her church. Edith was also a member of the Staying in the Stitches Quilt Guild and could be found every Wednesday in Statesboro quilting with the ladies. She was an avid reader, made beautiful quilts, and enjoyed her flowers, garden and fruit trees. She always had a good story to tell and an infectious laugh. No one ever went hungry with Edith around. She sure did know how to cook. Ever the consummate caregiver; Edith was a kind and giving individual always doing for others. She truly gave her all.
Edith is survived by her husband and five of her children. She is preceded in death by her parents, seven siblings; Gordon, Paul, Edward, Myrtle, Annie, Mary, Susie and an infant daughter.
