George Howard West, 77, of Claxton went home to his Lord and Savior Saturday, June 8, 2013 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, after a short illness.
Howard is preceded in death by his parents W.A. and Ruby West of Candler County and twin sons.
Howard is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Shirley Cameron West, of Claxton; one daughter, Teri West Gary (Patrick) of Pooler; one granddaughter, Meloni Walker Hutcheson (Michael) of Claxton; one grandson, FC2 Robert W. Kight II USN of Jacksonville, FL; six great grandchildren, Dalton Hutcheson, Myah Walker, Andrew Walker, Dylan Walker, Madison Walker, and Kelsey Walker, all of Claxton. Two brothers, Carlton West (Ruth) of Savannah and Wendell West (Joan) of Metter and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Howard was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959. Howard retired from Equifax in 1991. He was an active member and a Deacon of Evergreen Baptist Church and was also active in the Evans County Gideons Association. He was active in service to many civic and religious organizations: Evans County 4-H from 1992-1999; Road Runners Camping Club; Southern Baptist Association Disaster Relief Team; Evans County Classics Car Club; S.A.R.A. Ham Radio; and Evergreen F.A.I.T.H. Riders Christian Motorcycle/Car Ministries.
Howard touched the lives of countless people in his community and beyond. He drove an Evans County School Bus for many years, acquiring the love and admiration of many Evans County Students. Howard was faithful in his service to the Lord and he touched many lives with his gentle and quiet nature.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home in Claxton. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 12 from 5-8pm at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home. Funeral and graveside services will be held Thursday, June 13 at 11am at Evergreen Baptist Church, Cobbtown, GA.
