CLAXTON: Inman William (Bill) Hearn, age 86, passed away after a lengthy illness on Friday, May 28, 2021, surrounded by loved ones Bill was an Evans County native, born in Bellville, Ga., and had been a resident of Daisy, Ga., for many years. He was a graduate of Claxton High School, class of 1952, and Abraham Baldwin College in Tifton, Georgia.
He was the founder and former owner of Savannah Communications, Inc. in Savannah, Ga., and Communi-Tronics, Inc., in Claxton, Ga. He was also formerly employed at NeSmith Chevrolet in Claxton. He also served in the Georgia Air National Guard and was a licensed Coast Guard Captain, operating a charter fishing service out of Pine Harbor, Ga., for several years.
Bill was a former city councilman for the city of Daisy and served as the first chairman of Pinewood Christian Academy’s Board of Directors for four years. He was a member of the Evans Memorial Hospital Board of Directors for 20 years and was also a member of the Claxton Jaycees. He served as president of Evans County Wildlife Club in 1968, which was the first year the Rattlesnake Round-Up was held jointly with the Evans County Farm Bureau. He was honored to officiate as the parade’s Grand Marshal during the event’s 30th anniversary in 1998.
As a faithful member of Claxton First Baptist Church, Bill served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, Discipleship training leader, choir member and property committee chairman.
Bill was an accomplished hunter who killed more than 100 white-tailed deer with a bow and arrow during his lifetime. He was also a member of Bulloch Bowmen in Statesboro, Ga., and enjoyed saltwater and freshwater fishing.
Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Priscilla S. Hearn; daughter, Juliann H. Cowart (Donald) of Brooklet, Ga.; son, Philip W. Hearn (Carmel) of Atlanta, Ga.; grandson, Robbie N. Cowart (Michell) of Frisco, Texas; granddaughter, Alex H. Swanger (Stephen) of Savannah; and great-grandchildren Alanah and Leila Cowart and David Swanger. Also surviving are Bill’s sister, Emily Groover (David) of Bellville; and brother, Dr. Jack Hearn (Jane) of Valdosta, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
The pallbearers will be Alan Groover, Neal Groover, Craig Smith, Jonathan Smith, Daniel Womack and Stephen Swanger.
A private funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 1 at 2:00 p.m.
