CLAXTON: Mr. W.G. (Bill) Boney, 91, passed away peacefully at home August 19, 2018 with his family by his side. He was a native of Telfair County, growing up in China Hill, Georgia. He was valedictorian of his high school class.
After high school Bill joined the U.S. Navy and became a Pharmacist Mate First Class during WWII. After being honorably discharged, he attended the University of Georgia where he received his B.S. degree in Pharmacy. In 1956, he moved to Claxton and purchased Brown’s Pharmacy, which he owned and operated as Boney’s Drug Store from 1956 to 1997. He had a pivotal role in The Claxton Bank for many years during which he was a co-owner, Vice-President and served on the Board of Directors for over 40 years. He was past President of the Claxton Jaycees, the Claxton Rotary Club and the Claxton Chamber of Commerce.
A founding member of the Evans Heights Golf Course and the Claxton Investment Club, Bill was a leader in the community. He enjoyed hunting, coastal salt water fishing and timber farming, but his greatest passion was playing golf and he was very proud of his 8 hole-in-ones. He was a member of the Claxton First United Methodist Church and the Service Sunday School Class since 1956.
Bill was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Meeks Boney and his brother, Franklin Boney.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Memie Collins Boney of Claxton; two sons, Jeff Boney (Linda Pike) of Atlanta, and Mike (Karen) Boney of Claxton; his special grandson, Will (Aerial) Boney of Columbia, S.C., and special granddaughter, Micahlan Boney of Claxton; a sister-in-law, LaJoy Boney of China Hill, GA; a sister and brother-in-law, Judy (Clyde) Davis of Glennville; brothers and sisters–in–law, Jake (Penny) Collins of Statesboro, Steve (Joy) Collins and Carroll Collins of Claxton, and Bill (Lynn) Collins of LaGrange, N.C.; and several nieces, nephews and other family.
VISITATION: Tuesday, August 21, 2018, 5-7:00 p.m., at J. Mellie NeSmith Funeral Home.
FUNERAL: Wednesday, August 22, 2018, 11:00 a.m., at the Claxton First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mike Lyons and Dr. Tab Smith officiating.
BURIAL: Wednesday, 3:30 p.m., at Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery, China Hill, GA.
PALLBEARERS: Grady Boney, Jake Boney, Steve Collins, Lee Johnson, Mid Parker and Terry Branch.
